World’s highest Islamic figure set to visit Nigeria

The president of the Muslim Council of Elders, who is considered as the highest Islamic figure in the world, Sheikh Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed el-Tayeb, is set to visit Nigeria for an historic three days visit.

Dr. el-Tayeb, who is the current Grand Imam of al-Azhar is slated to visit from 16th-18th of May, 2016.
A statement signed by the head of press and information office, Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abuja, Mr Ahmed Maher, said “The Grand Imam will be delivering a public lecture in the International Conference Center (ICC) in Abuja on May 17th, 2016 titled: ‘Islam is a Religion of Peace, Challenges of Confronting the Extremism and Terrorism’ aimed at discussing the mechanisms of spreading the moderate and tolerant values of Islam.”
He noted that the visit will be very significant as it would contribute to promote understanding of Islam which rejects all forms of extremism and the misuse of religion to justify the act of terrorism.
“It is note worthy that Al-Azhar Institution was founded in 970 (more than one thousand years ago) includes various educational and culture organs and is considered the oldest Islamic Institution in the world and the minaret for the tolerant values of Islam that urges the co-existence between religions.
“Al-Azhar University, which is one of the organs of Al-Azhar Institution, offers 30 full scholarships annually to Nigerian students to study at various scientific and religious colleges at Al-Azhar University.
“There are more than three thousand Nigerians currently studying at Al-Azhar university in discipline such as: medicine, engineering, languages and other fields.
He added that Al-Azhar institution deploys more than 50 Egyptian preachers to different Nigerian states to educate students on Arabic language and to enlighten the society on the importance of co-existence between different religions.
The high level delegation includes the secretary general, Muslim Council of Elders and high rank officials from Al-Azhar Dr. Ali Rashed Al-Noa’mi.
